Women’s health care in the medical literature of Tibet,

Isabella Würthner, received her M.A. in Tibetan and Buddhist Studies from the University of Vienna and is now writing her PhD at the University of Munich. Her research interests focus on the medical literature, early history of medicine and the colloquial language of Tibet. Her dissertation project deals with the critical analysis and translation of selected medical texts concerning women’s health care.
The Tibetan medical heritage is based on the book of the Four Tantras (rGyud-bzhi), which still remains as the fundamental medical text today.Ms Würthner will give a general introduction to Tibetan medicine but also about the advice for diet and lifestyle during pregnancy from this classical text rGyud-bzhi and a modern contribution by Dr. Pema Dorjee of the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute in Dharamsala.
Her fundamental research aims to provide insights into the Tibetan perception of gynecological disorders and to unlock the relevant medical vocabulary.
